William Herbert Hunt passed away on April 9, 2024, at the age of 95, in Dallas, Texas.

Described as an “iconic wildcatter” by industry peers, Hunt was the founder of Dallas-based Petro-Hunt, one of the top 10 privately-owned oil producers in the United States. He was an emeritus member of AAPG’s Corporate Advisory Board up until his passing, a winner of AAPG’s Pioneer Award and an AAPG member since 1953.

He was the son of legendary oil tycoon H.L. Hunt, who was the reported inspiration for the J.R. Ewing character on the long-running TV series “Dallas,” but grew to legendary status in his own right by his own prolific operations in the Permian, Williston and Powder River basins and in the Eagle Ford Shale.

He was president of the Dallas Wildcat Committee in 1965-66 and served as president of the Dallas Petroleum Club in 1970. He served on the Board of Directors of the American Petroleum Institute, as president of the International Association of Drilling Contractors and as chairman of the National Ocean Industries Association. Herbert was the last surviving original inductee of the All-American Wildcatters. He was an Advisory Board member of the Maguire Energy Institute at Southern Methodist University and served on the board at SMU’s Institute for the Study of Earth and Man.
