Vlasta Dvorakova Passes at 55

Vlastimila “Vlasta” Dvorakova, a former president of the AAPG Europe Region and an important leader in AAPG regional and international activities, died Friday, June 12, after a long illness. She was 55.

Dvorakova was a senior researcher for the Czech Geological Survey, in Brno, Czech Republic, where she not only filed more than 65 reports on geophysics and more than 20 geological survey reports to local government services, she also was a well-known media spokesman for both the Czech Survey and geosciences.

Vlastimila “Vlasta” Dvorakova, a former president of the AAPG Europe Region and an important leader in AAPG regional and international activities, died Friday, June 12, after a long illness. She was 55.

Dvorakova was a senior researcher for the Czech Geological Survey, in Brno, Czech Republic, where she not only filed more than 65 reports on geophysics and more than 20 geological survey reports to local government services, she also was a well-known media spokesman for both the Czech Survey and geosciences.

A candidate for AAPG treasurer in 2013, Dvorakova was president of the AAPG Europe Region in 2011-13, having served the previous two years on the ER leadership council as president-elect. Prior to that she was the Region’s secretary-treasurer from 2006-09.

She also served on numerous AAPG and AAPG Europe Region committees, and was on the leadership team for several regional and international conferences, including serving as general vice co-chair for the 2014 AAPG International Conference and Exhibition in Istanbul, Turkey.

At the time of her death she was representing the Region in the AAPG House of Delegates, from which she received a Distinguished Member of the House award in 2012.

Another of her AAPG passions was for advancement of geoscience education, and she was a proud and tireless member of the AAPG/AAPG Foundation Imperial Barrel Award program. She was able to attend this year’s Region finals in Prague, Czech Republic, and reportedly was able to enjoy the news that the ER representative, Royal Holloway, won the IBA in Denver.
