Employers, Grads-to-Be to Meet

Graduating geology students want jobs. Exploration and production companies need young geologists.

Gee. Maybe they should get together and help each other out.

That novel idea once again will be a reality Sept. 30-Oct. 1 on the Rice University campus in Houston, as AAPG and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists co-sponsor the sixth Student Expo, designed to mutually benefit students interested in geoscience careers as well as environmental and petroleum industry representatives seeking employees.

The two-day Expo provides opportunities for students to showcase their work in poster sessions, network with industry representatives, attend a career workshop and visit recruiters' offices.

In turn, industry representatives are given a cost-efficient venue to link with potential new hires and interns and see their work and skills in a unique environment.

Representatives of the sponsoring companies are invited to present exhibits to promote their activities or services. Sponsors are provided with student resumes prior to the Expo, and are encouraged to invite students to their office for exposure to industry and/or interviews.

The AAPG or SEG Student Member rate is $10. The non-member rate is $20. Faculty members are invited at no fee in support of their students.

Students also can choose to present a poster session, which has proven to be an excellent venue to "strut your stuff" before potential employers.

Four previous Student Expos were held at Rice and one was held last spring at the University of Oklahoma. The 2000 Expo at Rice drew 150 students from over 50 colleges and universities, and generated jobs and internships that would not have happened any other way.

Students or companies seeking further information should see the Student Expo Web site , or contact AAPG Student Affairs.

Faculty of university departments wishing to host a poster must submit an abstract.

Late registration (after Sept. 15) and onsite registration fee is an additional $5.

Poster session abstracts book is $10 for students and free for sponsors. Students who wish to participate in the poster session must submit an abstract. Those registering after Sept. 11 will not be able to submit an abstract nor have a poster session.

Students must submit their resume upon registration. These will be made available to industry sponsors.

Resumes received after Sept. 11 will not be included in the resume booklet for corporate sponsors, but will be distributed to sponsors after they arrive at the Expo.
