For the first time in the 85-year history of AAPG, a third candidate has entered a race for national office by way of petition.

The two nominated candidates for treasurer, Larry C. Knauer and Paul Weimer, will be joined on the ballot by Dwight "Clint" Moore.

AAPG Bylaws clearly state the methods by which candidates may appear on the ballot.

Knauer and Weimer were on a list of candidates for treasurer (and other offices) compiled by the Nominations Committee of the Advisory Council, of which Moore is a member, and forwarded to the AAPG Executive Committee.

The Executive Committee approved Knauer and Weimer as candidates to appear on the ballot at a February 25, 2001 meeting. The announcement of the two candidates appeared in the August EXPLORER. All of the Treasurer candidate statements, including biographies and photos, appear in the the November EXPLORER.

AAPG Bylaws, however, also allow additional nominations by written petition of 50 or more members in good standing, to be received at association headquarters in Tulsa by November 15.

Moore submitted written signatures of 56 members in support of his nomination for the treasurer's post on Nov. 6. Fifty-five were certified by AAPG as members in good standing.

As a candidate for treasurer, Moore has also complied with other requirements, including the signing of the Election Campaign Policy (August EXPLORER).

The Executive Committee, in its desire for fairness to all candidates, has opted to make available in this EXPLORER the biographies, photos and statements of each of the treasurer candidates. Knauer and Weimer address the same question addressed below, "Why I Accepted the Invitation to be a Candidate for AAPG Office." Both were given the opportunity to change their statement, if they so desired, as ordinarily these statements are made without the candidates having seen the others' statements.

Moore addresses the question "Why I Decided to be a Petitioned Candidate."

As in the past, candidates were asked to limit their comments to 500 words or less.
