An undersea explorer, a Canadian energy expert and an expert on ethics in the profession will be the special luncheon speakers in Calgary during the AAPG Annual Convention.

All three ticketed luncheons will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Upper Level Big Four Building at Calgary’s Stampede Park.

Of the three, one of the speakers is a late addition to the lineup.

Scott W. Tinker, this year’s AAPG Distinguished Ethics Lecturer, will be the speaker for the Division of Professional Affairs luncheon, which will be held Tuesday, June 21.

Tinker has agreed to step-in for Kenneth Vollman, chairman of Canada’s National Energy Board, who will be unable to attend the meeting due to a scheduling conflict.

Tinker will be speaking on “[PFItemLinkShortcode|id:41461|type:standard|anchorText:The 'I' In Business Ethics|cssClass:asshref|title:|PFItemLinkShortcode],” a topic that he’ll be exploring throughout the year with his Ethics lectures.

Tinker’s talk assumes that some ethical situations can be guided by rules, laws and policies – but many situations are “neither wholly right nor wholly wrong,” and introduce difficult dilemmas that carry justifiable alternatives and significant consequences.

Is it possible, Tinker asks, to frame an approach for ethical decision making in a world where no society, culture or religion holds the ethical high ground?

Tinker is director of the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas at Austin. He’s also a professor in the school’s Department of Geological Sciences and serves as state geologist of Texas.

Other luncheon speakers set for Calgary are:

● Dr. Joseph MacInnis, a physician, scientist, undersea explorer and author, is the speaker for the All-Convention Luncheon, which will be held Monday, June 20.

MacInnis plans to talk about some of the individuals and events that taught him about leadership, and to show video clips of some of his dramatic deepwater dives, including one to the decks of the Titanic with Hollywood director James Cameron. ● Jim Dinning, chairman of the Canadian Clean Power Coalition, is the speaker for the joint Division of Environmental Geosciences-Energy Minerals Division luncheon, to be held on Wednesday, June 22.

Dinning, who describes Alberta as “the sweet spot where geology meets geography,” will talk on “Marginal Carbon Fuels: The Key to Prosperity.”

Dinning plans to speak specifically about clean coal technology, particularly as it applies to providing energy and feedstock to Alberta’s expanding oil sands and petrochemical industries.
