B. "Jack" Thomas announced he is retiring as AAPG geoscience
director, intending to "smell some roses" while resuming
the consulting practice he had prior to coming to AAPG in April
2002.

has begun.
AAPG Executive
Director Rick Fritz said "Jack has been a real asset to AAPG,
and we will miss his boundless energy and enthusiasm for new ideas
and programs. Although Jack calls this a 'retirement to Florida,'
he assures me that he will continue to help and support AAPG, and
looks forward to a continuance of his consulting career."
During
Thomas' tenure, AAPG's Training Partners program was launched, under
which auspices a month-long training program at headquarters hosted
a group of Russian professionals last fall (January EXPLORER); BULLETIN
editorial turnaround was reduced by over 12 months; 12 publications
were made available; and AAPG's geoscience department, consisting
of three subdivisions, was relocated to a one-office location.
Thomas
retired from BP Amoco in 1999 after career assignments that included
exploration and production, research and technical risk evaluation,
manager of coalbed methane exploration and manager of the Integrated
Studies Section and supervisor of the Petrophysics Research and
Training Group.
He previously
was a partner and director with Reservoirs Inc. in Denver, an exploration
geologist with Mobil in various locations and also has taught at
the College of William and Mary and the University of Oklahoma,
where he also earned his doctorate.
He holds
bachelor's and master's degrees from Miami of Ohio University.
Thomas
and his wife Joyce plan a future move to the Fort Myers, Fla., area.
