Spring Student Expo At OU Is Coming Fast

annual AAPG Spring
Student Expo, scheduled for March 15-16 at the University of
Oklahoma campus in Norman, has added some new attractions for students
and companies who want to meet each other.

Geology
students seeking a career in the petroleum industry are about to
get a big chance to make a good first impression with potential
employers.
The second
annual AAPG Spring
Student Expo, scheduled for March 15-16 at the University of
Oklahoma campus in Norman, has added some new attractions for students
and companies who want to meet each other.
All three
of the new activities are free to Expo students and company participants.
They are:
- AAPG Distinguished
Lecturer Roger M. Slatt will be teaching a one-and-a-half-day
mini-course March 14 and 15 on "Petroleum Geology of Deepwater
(Turbidite) Depositional Systems."
- A one-day field seminar
to the Arbuckle Mountains will be offered by the Oklahoma Geological
Survey on March 15.
- Also on March 15,
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Alan Witten will teach "Computer Graphics
for Geophysics," using a "hands-on" approach to MATLAB for 1-,
2- and 3-dimensional display of geological and geophysical data.
The spring
student expo is designed to mutually benefit geoscience students
interested in energy careers and energy industry representatives
seeking interns and full-time employees. It provides the opportunity
for students to showcase their work in poster format and to network
with industry representatives, who are also invited to promote their
company's exploration, development and service activities.
Attending
companies will be provided with student resumés and will be able
to talk with students during an informal Icebreaker the evening
of March 15; during poster sessions and onsite interviews on March
16; and during a Saint Patrick's Day dinner party that will end
the expo.
Over 90
students from 29 colleges and universities from 13 states participated
in the 2001 inaugural event. An even larger turnout is anticipated
in March.
The spring
expo, which begins immediately following the AAPG annual meeting
in Houston, is scheduled to take advantage of spring break for a
number of mid-continent and Gulf Coast universities. Hosts for the
AAPG Expo are the University
of Oklahoma School of Geology and Geophysics, the Sarkeys Energy
Center and the Oklahoma Geological Survey.
Fees are
$10 for AAPG Student members and $20 for non-members. Faculty attending
in support of students are invited at no fee.
