Attention, all AAPG members who are interested in gaining new knowledge, contacts and exploration experiences in a truly magnificent setting: You HAVE to attend the next AAPG International Conference and Exhibition, set Sept. 21-24 at the Catalonia Palace of Congresses in Barcelona, Spain.

Why do you HAVE to come, you ask?

There are plenty of reasons, and although it is difficult to select just a few, we'll try:

There will be a remarkable technical program, prepared by a very knowledgeable and experienced team, which will draw many interesting papers prepared by well-known experts in their respective fields of action.

Main sub-themes will be:

  • Regional Geology.
  • Field Based Geological Models.
  • Business and Energy Transport.
  • Technology.

I'm sure you will find in these sub-themes many matters in which you will be interested.

Come to attend one (or two!) of the field trips organized for the meeting. As you know, Spain and the Spanish Pyrenees, in particular, are famous for their magnificent exposures and outcrops, which have been the basis for many field-based analogs applied in hydrocarbon exploration, and which are widely known among oil geologists and geophysicists.

There will be clastic and carbonates analogs, as well as field examples of "seismic stratigraphy" that I believe are unique in the world.

Besides, we plan to run parallel tourist trips for the guests who desire to accompany their partners in the field but are not "crazy about rocks." Those parallel trips will visit natural parks and their wildlife, monasteries, castles, churches and other beautiful natural scenes that they will talk about when they meet their companions at dinner.

We will have numerous short courses that will cover many fields and disciplines related to geology and the oil industry.

Some of the courses will offer field applications, so pupils have a practical course as well as a theoretical one.

Barcelona has a lot to offer itself as a cosmopolitan city with worldwide recognition since the 1992 Summer Olympics. You could visit not only the Olympic scenarios, but Barcelona's gothic and medieval downtown with Roman ruins, its "modernistic" and Gaudian architecture, its numerous art galleries and museums.

Add in the nightlife and shows, not to talk about the many opportunities you and your guest will have to do some original and interesting shopping.

  • The Catalonian region is also known by our cuisine, and we thought that visitors should enjoy not only the opportunity to sample it but also the possibility of learning it. Therefore a "cuisine short course" will be offered as well.

With all of the above, I think I have given you enough reasons to come and enjoy what will be the best AAPG international meeting ever held. Come and visit us — we are prepared to receive you with the utmost hospitality and our willingness for you to have the most unforgettable experience of your life!

The final announcement, including complete registration details and hotel reservation information, will be available in April. For more information go to AAPG International Conference and Exhibition, or contact the AAPG convention department via telephone (1-918-560-2617), fax (1-918-560-2684) or e-mail ([email protected]).
