A ballot was mailed in early July to AAPG members to vote on a proposed change to the Constitution, which would possibly allow their next vote to be made electronically.

Members of the AAPG House of Delegates unanimously passed the Constitution proposal, along with five alterations to the Bylaws at the AAPG Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City.

HoD Chairman Terry Hollrah, of Oklahoma City, said ballots would be mailed to active members before July 1. A two-thirds positive majority is necessary to allow the change to make it possible for AAPG voting to be conducted by electronic mail or other suitable means in the future.

Bylaws also were amended to allow for the election of officers and filing of officer vacancies to be conducted by electronic means.

Other Bylaws changes approved by the 190 delegates attending included:

  • Names of AAPG officer candidates will be published in the AAPG EXPLORER rather than the BULLETIN, no later than Oct. 15.
  • A new section restricts members serving as officers or candidates for offices to AAPG, the HoD, the Advisory Council or divisions from being selected for an honor or award by the body on or in which they serve.

The HoD Recognition of Service Award was excluded from this amendment, unless the award was announced prior to the announcement of the candidacy.

  • The number of members serving on the AAPG Ethics Committee was increased from three to five, to ensure that the committee remain functional should one or more committee members need to excuse themselves for a potential conflict of interest.

Societies that were approved to be affiliated societies of AAPG were the Association of Petroleum Technicians and Professionals France, the Atyrau Petroleum Geologists Association Kazakhstan and the Sociedad Geologica de Peru.

Approved as associated societies were the Association for Women Geoscientists and the National Association of Black Geologists and Geophysicists.

HoD award recipients for the year 2002-2003, announced at the meeting, were:

  • Thomas Mairs - Honorary Member of the House.
  • Edward Heath and Robert Countryman - Distinguished Members of the House.
  • Peter Gray and Jeff Greenawalt - House Long Service.
  • Lee Avary and Terry Hollrah - House Recognition of Service.
