The Canada Region
is one of six AAPG International Regions, a structure adopted in 2000
to provide international members with a voice in the governance of AAPG.
Our goals are
to:
- Promote
member services.
- Provide
outreach to students within Canada.
- Work
with AAPG on issues that affect the region.
When you think
of it, Canada is a unique Region for AAPG. The other International Regions
— Europe, Africa, Middle East, Latin America and Asia/Pacific — are
comprised of multiple countries, covering vast distances and numerous
sedimentary basins. Well, let's look at Canada:
- Canada
has six time zones, three oceans, a total area of 10 million square
kilometers, stretching 5,500 kilometers from east to west and 4,600
kilometers from north to south. In geographical terms, we're not the
smallest region — and we're also far from the largest.
- Canada
has the most Active members of AAPG, outside of the United States,
with 1,015 Active members — 1,544 total members, including Associates
and Students.
- The vast
majority of the Canada Region membership lives within a 50-kilometer
radius of Calgary, Alberta — Canada's oil and gas capital. Our Canada
Region membership works on oil and gas projects in the Western Canada
Sedimentary Basin and throughout the world.
As a Region,
we have a very close working relationship with the Canadian Society
of Petroleum Geologists (CSPG), an affiliated society of AAPG and the
third largest international geological society in the world.
Among the focus
of activities of the Canada Region are the development of active student
chapters and helping the University of Calgary to have students attend
the twice-monthly CSPG luncheons, which attract 600 to 800 geologists
per luncheon.
In addition,
we support the annual Distinguished Lecture tours, the Visiting Geologist
Program and annual AAPG membership drives — services that are well-received
by many of our members.
Of top priority
right now is developing the program for AAPG's 2005 annual meeting,
which will be held in Calgary from June 19-22. A large number of AAPG
members will be involved in welcoming the geoscience community to Calgary
for this meeting, our first chance to host the annual meeting since
1992.

The Canada
Region needs you; if you are a member of the AAPG and interested in
volunteering, please consider how you can assist.
Members of
the Canada Region are required to serve on various committees — and
if you are an Active, Honorary or Emeritus member of the AAPG, you are
eligible to take advantage of one or both of the opportunities below.
1. Call for nominations
for officers for the Canada Region.
The three positions of
president, vice president/treasurer and secretary/foreman, each of
which has a one-year term, will be falling vacant for the 2004-05
term. These officers serve on the Region's Executive Committee, a
body that helps promote AAPG services in Canada.
2. Call for nominations
for Delegates, AAPG House of Delegates.
The Canada Region is currently
represented in the AAPG House of Delegates by 14 delegates from the
Region, and there will be six vacancies in these three-year positions
for the coming term of office (2004-07). There are also additional
opportunities to serve as alternate delegates.
