Foundation Trustee Associates Meeting Set for Marcellus Shale Country

It’s been a long time coming, but this year’s AAPG Foundation Trustee Associates annual meeting definitely promises to have been worth the wait.

The meeting will be held Oct. 13-17 at the beautiful Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, in the heart of Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale country.

Originally considered as the site for the 2020 TA meeting, COVID put an end to those plans as well as all other activities. The Foundation TAs, like the rest of the country, haven’t had a chance to meet face-to-face since 2019 – and as meeting chair Jeff Lund points out, that makes this year’s event more special than ever.

It will be, he said, a chance to reconnect …

● With friends and peers

● With the rejuvenating ambiance of nature and a beautiful fall season

● With the charitable spirit – and now increasingly crucial mission – of the AAPG Foundation.

“The proposal to go to Nemacolin was originated by (TA) Dan Billman, who lives in Pittsburgh and is an Appalachian Basin expert,” Lund said. “Dan, (TAs) Bill Zagorski and Jim Funk all enthusiastically agreed it would be a great venue.”

Lund also notes that Zagorski is more than just “familiar” with the area – he is officially known as the “Father of the Marcellus,” receiving AAPG’s prestigious Norman Foster Explorer of the Year Award for his work with Range Resources in drilling a wildcat that unlocked the now-prolific play.

“Bill can get us access to the Range Resources site and infrastructure and tell his amazing story,” Lund said. “How cool to have a colleague be the expert.”

As always, he added, the event’s agenda will include the informative TA business meetings, wonderful receptions, fabulous meals, a variety of exciting day trips through the scenic and energy-important region and a host of recreational options.

In a nutshell:

The setting: Autumn in the heart of Pennsylvania’s magnificent Laurel Highlands – a geologic wonderland and home to colorful forests and the state’s highest mountains.

The location: The historic and popular Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, offering a host of cultural and recreational activities – including PGA Tour golf courses, fishing, wine cellar tours, nature trails, luxurious spas and five-star dining.

The bonus: Tours planned specifically for the Foundation TAs, including visits to Frank Lloyd Wright’s spectacular Fallingwater House (an UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Flight 93 Memorial and, of course, a customized tour through the heart of Marcellus Shale country.

Plus, finally, at the end of a two-year hiatus, a chance to reconnect.
