New faces have been elected to key leadership positions for the AAPG Foundation, helping to ensure stability, success and innovation for the Foundation in the coming decade – and beyond.
The new members and officers fill positions for three separate groups that help guide and direct all Foundation efforts: The Board of Trustees, Members of the Corporation and Trustee Associates.
The terms of office began in November.
“We’re very pleased and, frankly, excited to announce these updates for the Foundation, because they underline our efforts to remain a vital and important part of the future of geosciences,” said Jim McGhay, newly elected chair of the Foundation trustees.
The work already has begun.
“Already we’re busy, thinking both strategically and practically about ways to help chart the Foundation’s future,” McGhay said, “and all of those who are joining the leadership team will be an important part of that process.
“The Foundation helps a lot of people in a lot of ways – the way it supports geoscience education on all levels, for example, and its ongoing efforts with programs such as the Distinguished Lectures and (Visiting Geoscientists) – well, the crucial thrust behind those efforts are the members of Foundation leadership who bring forth and champion those ideas,” he continued.
“When people recognize and compliment the Foundation for efforts of support, these are the people to thank.”
McGhay’s tenure as Foundation board chair was announced in November, succeeding longtime chair James A. Gibbs, who retired after nearly a decade of heading the board, but who will continue as Trustee Emeritus.
To complete the six-member board, trustees elected C. Scott Cameron, of Pacific Beach, Wash., retired from Shell Energy Resources and now a principal with Houston-based GeoLogical Consulting LLC.
The Foundation trustees comprises up to six people elected to three-year terms from among the Members of the Corporation. Their duties are to manage the business and property of the Foundation.
In addition to McGhay, Cameron joins a board comprising Larry L. Jones (vice chair), Michael Wisda (secretary), Lee Backsen (treasurer) and Valary Schulz.
Members of the Corporation
The Foundation’s Members of the Corporation, established in 1986 and which serves as an advisory group to the trustees, includes Trustee Emeritus members and 20 regular members who serve five-year terms, along with 10 Trustee Emeritus members.
The MOC announced it has elected four new members to fill expiring-terms. They are:
MOC members are nominated from those who financially support and are actively involved in Foundation activities, including educational, charitable and scientific undertakings.

Foundation Trustee Associates
The Trustee Associates, a group formed in 1978, comprises those who play a vital role in the development of the Foundation’s financial resources.
This group has been called “the backbone of the AAPG Foundation,” due to their promotion of Foundation programs and activities (more than 30); by providing counsel to the trustees; by supporting fundraising efforts; and by helping to guide the scientific and educational agenda they underwrite.
The TAs held its annual meeting recently at the Nemancolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pa., and announced the group’s new officers for the coming year. They are:
