Gregg A. Norman, a highly respected exploration geologist passed away at his home on Oct. 17, 2024 at the age of 61.

Norman was born on Dec.1, 1962, in Munday, Texas. He spent his youth exploring the rugged northwest Texas terrain, instilling in him a lifelong passion for Earth sciences, which led him to graduate from Midwestern State University in 1987 with a bachelor’s in geology.

Norman’s 37-year career began with the Gunn Oil Company where he worked from 1987 to 2015 as a geotech, geologist and eventually the vice president of geology. In 2015, he left Gunn Oil Company and co-founded Norman Browning Exploration alongside his lifelong friend and colleague, Jimmy Browning. Together, they made a significant impact by discovering one of the largest Strawn Sand oil fields since the 1970s.

Throughout his professional life, Norman received numerous awards and accolades for his work and served his profession by holding numerous positions in geological societies. He served as 2013-14 president of AAPG’s Southwest Section and 1997-98 president of the North Texas Geological Society.

His contributions to the field were most recently recognized by AAPG with the Norman H. Foster Exploration Award in 2024, and previously with the Monroe G. Cheney Science Award in 2015 and the A.I. Levorsen Award in 1998. He was also a frequent speaker at AAPG events, and he was an AAPG DPA certified petroleum geologist and a Texas licensed professional geoscientist.
