As vice president for international regions, I believe it’s crucial to examine how our society can harness the power of globalization to advance our field and benefit our members.

“Globalization” is the increasing interdependence of nations through flows of information, technology and people, offering unprecedented opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing and professional growth. We must ask: Are we fully using these benefits? Could we improve by embracing cross-cultural exchange and diverse viewpoints?
I believe that the true wealth of globalization lies in its potential to let us appreciate diversity and learn from it. Following established paradigms can limit understanding. Stepping outside comfort zones and exploring unconventional paths is crucial. Traveling and learning from diverse cultures can provide unbiased approaches.
Benefits of Globalization for Petroleum Geosciences
- Enhanced knowledge exchange: The geoscience field is inherently global and globalization facilitates the rapid exchange of cutting-edge research, best practices and innovative technologies through international conferences, workshops and online platforms. Recently, I visited two of the regions I serve: Latin America and Africa. From the former, I came back home oozing with enthusiasm from the young professionals. We can all learn from Latin America, the way they organize and pull together young professionals events. From Africa, I was intrigued by how collaborative and innovative the teams were on working on these emerging basins, integrating all kinds of disciplines in order to generate high-quality prospects.
- Promoting diversity and inclusion: Globalization fosters a more diverse and inclusive geosciences community by bringing together professionals from different cultural backgrounds enriching our perspectives and enhancing our problem-solving capabilities. By expanding our reach, we can ensure that geoscientists from underrepresented regions have access to the same opportunities and resources as their counterparts in developed countries. Collaborating in multicultural teams equips us to promote interdisciplinary innovation among scientists through exposure to various methodologies and viewpoints.
- Expanded professional networks: Globalization breaks down geographical barriers, enabling us to connect with colleagues from around the world. These connections foster cross-cultural understanding, build valuable partnerships, and open doors to new career opportunities.
- Access to diverse geological settings and expertise: Different regions possess unique geological settings and petroleum systems. Globalization allows us to gain firsthand experience in diverse settings, learn from local experts and apply this knowledge to our own work. For example, studying global mega petroleum basins – often referred to as “super basins,” offers invaluable insights for petroleum geoscientists. Some of these basins, located in the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, hold a significant portion of the world’s hydrocarbon reserves and analyzing them can provide a wealth of knowledge applicable to exploration and production worldwide.
- Technological advancement and innovation: Global collaboration accelerates the development and deployment of new technologies, such as advanced seismic imaging, data analytics and carbon capture and storage. By sharing resources and expertise, we can drive innovation and address the evolving energy landscape. Namibia, Mozambique and Senegal, truly emerging oil provinces, showcase the benefits of real integration of disciplines that have yielded big rewards, and highlight great prospective areas.
- Addressing global energy challenges: The world faces pressing energy challenges, including energy security, climate change, sustainable energy sources, resource scarcity, economic and technological inequality, etc. Globalization enables us to work together and share best practices to find solutions that are both economically viable and environmentally responsible.
Capitalizing on Globalization
- Promote international collaboration: Encourage joint research projects, exchange programs, and partnerships with universities and industry organizations worldwide.
- Enhance digital platforms: Invest in online platforms that facilitate knowledge sharing, networking, and virtual events.
- Organize international events: Continue to host and participate in international conferences and workshops that bring together experts from around the globe.
- Foster diversity and inclusion: Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for members from all backgrounds and cultures.
- Support early career professionals: Provide opportunities for young geoscientists to gain international experience and build global networks.
For the professional geoscience organization, an emphasis on globalization guarantees culturally sensitive, inclusive strategies tailored to serve a wide, global geoscience community. This is exactly why I have agreed to serve as AAPG vice president for international regions. Over the years, I have collaborated in organizing international AAPG conferences and workshops and I can attest to the valuable benefits I have gained from seeing and hearing other perspectives. Taking the time to embrace local norms in how to conduct business, you will eventually see some great values that you can bring home. Integrating a global perspective within a richly varied cultural landscape enables scientists and decision-makers to predict emerging trends, adjust to multiple challenges and foster significant innovations.

By embracing collaboration, fostering innovation and promoting diversity, we can collectively advance our field and contribute to a sustainable energy future.
