Back to Kuala Lumpur
Greetings, members. I know I promised more on the changes proposed in the House of Delegates, but our dear EXPLORER editor informed me that my letter needed to be done earlier than usual, and I am almost walking out the door to go to the International Petroleum Technology Conference in Kuala Lumpur on behalf of AAPG. Time does not permit me to continue along the trail promised last month, so I will have to pick that up for the April issue.
I know many of you remember Marlan Downey as president of AAPG. He was famous for his short – one or two paragraphs, if that! – President’s Columns. I am following his lead this month.

I do remember the last time I was in Kuala Lumpur. It was March of 2020 and I was there to promote software and had meetings with Petronas and others. Suddenly, everyone was wearing a mask and temperatures were being taken from visitors to the larger companies, and I had no clue as to what was going on! I remember coming home after the first week in March in an almost empty plane. It was only when I got on the ground and saw the news that I realized that it was the beginning of the COVID epidemic. A week later, the world shut down.
Wow, I hope that doesn’t happen again!
Life is definitely different in a post-COVID world.
Executive Director Search Update
A quick update on the executive director search: The Committee opened up the application process again and we have six excellent candidates who were video interviewed this week (Feb. 10-14). Hopefully, out of that group, we will have the person who will help lead AAPG forward. The executive director, along with the many hundreds of wonderful volunteers, are who keep AAPG moving forward.
Next month: back on schedule.
Best,
Deborah
